Jessica Shirley is the third daughter born to a vagrant military family. She has lived and traveled in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America, and has made Atlanta her home. Her work draws on cultural and literary symbols to communicate personal and universal narrative. She works primarily in painting, often incorporating collage or sculptural elements into works. A love of language can be seen in words of English, Hebrew, Japanese Kanji, or Spanish incorporated into various works.
She graduated from the University of Georgia in 2004 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, and has since taught an “Artists Helping Artists” painting class at WonderRoot. Her work has been featured in Conversations Journal and on the cover of The Animal Parables, a children’s book in the United Kingdom. She has work in public and private collections throughout Georgia and the US.
